I recently had the pleasure of seeing the sensational film Fences. It does a marvelous job addressing what can happen when we allow our self-doubt and failures to consume us. It stars Viola Davis, Jovan Adepo, Mykelti Williamson and Denzel Washington (he is also the director and producer).
The film is about garbage collector Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington) and his family struggling to find a balance between their restrictions and their possibilities. On the surface, Troy is a solid and respectable husband and father (he financially takes care of his family and comes home every night). But right below the surface, he’s haunted by his past, angry about his present and dismissive about his future.
Throughout the film, Troy will be forced to face the strained relationship he has with his sons and his less than stellar behavior as a husband. Will Troy ever recognize the “fences” he’s built around himself and his family? You’ll have to go see this beautiful film to see what happens. You won’t be disappointed.

- The writing is beautifully gritty. The direction is flawlessly intentional and the acting is organic, thought-provoking and magical.
- Not one.
